The team from Widdop Bingham and Proteus WMS, has won the prestigious Return on Investment Award, at the SHD Logistics Awards, which were hosted by comedian Romesh Ranganathan, at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square on Thursday 19th March.

The event recognises and rewards operational excellence within the very best companies in the intralogistics, logistics and supply chain sectors, across eleven main categories. Widdop Bingham and Proteus WMS won for their proven delivery of Return on Investment.

As Widdop Bingham, a leading wholesaler of giftware and fancy goods to the trade have grown they’ve increased the size of their distribution centre to 110,000 sq. ft, however their paper-based picking system couldn’t keep up. After research Widdop selected Proteus WMS. The RF (Radio Frequency) Directed Warehouse Management System (WMS) integrated with existing systems, giving a seamless IT operation from point of order to issue of invoices.

All orders are processed in and out of the warehouse electronically, sent wirelessly to RF terminals equipped to all picking staff. This enables orders to be processed in priority sequence. The picking locations are constantly monitored by the system to ensure they are kept fully stocked. When the final pick is completed a despatch note is automatically produced eliminating the possibility of mis-shipments. Invoices are also automatically produced and issued to the customer directly.

The judges’ comments, read out by Romesh live on stage, said: “This leading wholesaler clearly demonstrated a return on its investment, after it moved from a paper picking system to an automated one, which has delivered improved picking accuracy of 99.8%, labour savings, space utilisation and has increased productivity by 10%”.
